During the summer of 1989, Birch Rock's master of all things fun and creative Bob Van Dyk came up with a plan to fake an eclipse for the campersIn other words, he planned the ultimate camp prank to fool every camper at once.

In 1992, the staff was called "the Sideshow" that summer.  With Director Bob Van Dyk leading the charge and a staff made up almost entirely of Campfire MCs, the theatrics and goofiness was constant.  There were many surprises every single day.  With a lack of equipment or not enough staff, but most importantly not enough campers, it was difficult to run activities (i.e. try teaching a double play in baseball with one camper), which meant the staff needed to entertain in other waysAnnouncements after meals would be known to go an hour or longer sometimes.

Bob was in his third summer as Head Counselor in '89 and was almost always funnyThe camp was small with only around twenty campers and the prank was planned for when the Senior Campers were off campus.  A couple of the Sunday staff meetings were used as time to plan and prepare as a group.  Bob spent about ten days quickly holding up a newspaper and announcing to the camp that there was going to be an eclipse.  Bob would go so far as to read parts of the "article" to the group, an article that apparently never existed.

Another round of facts about the buildings of Birch Rock:
+
* In 1983, Upper Camp, which was just Eagle's and Buzzard's, had a massive toga party involving bug juice and sweets, but more importantly music and good times.
*Albert's Cabin has had two additions since its construction as the cabin for head cook Albert Bryant
+
* There is a "Upper Camp Quad" with a fire pit and wooden seats (usually birch stumps) located in the middle between Owl's, Buzzard's, and Eagle's. This area was constructed in 2000 by the Art program when it was run by Ryno.
*The new Brewster Lodge has a sleeping loft only accessible by ladder
+
* Owl's Perch is the newest cabin in Upper Camp, Eagle's Nest is the oldest cabin, and Uncle Tom's Cabin no longer exists but was in the location of Pete's Palace and is almost completely forgotten about.
*Cabin 5 has a secret compartment...somewhere...that has the names of many of the campers who inhabited the cabin
+
* A checker board was carved into the very large stump downhill of Owl's in 2000 by Thomas Joyce; the tree that stood there can be seen in old photos of Upper Camp.
*Injun Joe's, named after the antagonist in Tom Sawyer, was moved further back from the lake in the early 2000s

*Eagle's Nest contains a road sign that many Eagle's Nest campers have signed

*The first group of CITs to occupy Pete's Palace were required to work its construction before they moved in

*In the '90s a white pine leaning dangerously towards Cabin 8 was cut down among speculation that the tree was trying to fall on Cabin 8 as revenge for being used as the "Pee Tree" by its inhabitants

*The Kennel used to be the lower wash house building

Getting Started

 • Look up some of your favorite things at Birch Rock and maybe learn a little more about them. If you don't know what to look up, click the random page link to see a random article.
 • Register an account by clicking the link in the top right. After that you can write and edit pages.
 • Read some help pages to learn how to use this site.
 • Write an article about something at Birch Rock like your favorite activity, your last cabin, or anything that you think merits an article.
 • Look at the pages that have already been made and edit them.
 • If you don't know what to write an article about, look at the list of wanted pages and write one of those.
