Flagpole
Birch Rock's flagpole area is an important gathering point at least twice everyday. The morning flag-raising is a time to hoist the flag, say the pledge and review the daily worksheet. The evening flag-lowering not only allows us to bring the flag down, but also we announce the inspection winner and super camper, sort of a review of the day. The flagpole is primarily run by the Head Counselor with the campers and staff lined up by cabins in three lines. Directors and other leadership along with visitors will stand in an additional back or side line or up on the lodge porch.
Flagpole is one of a few times during the day when there is the full camp gathered together. It is a good time to make a spot check of campers and staff to make sure all are present and healthy, happy, hopping, and such.
Birch Rock's First Flag Raising
Old Glory takes to the sky for the first time at Birch Rock on the 1926 anniversary of the nation's birthday. Billy Carleton is sounding "To the Colors" and the youngest boys in camp, Erik Johnson and Colin MacLaurin, are raising the flag.(See photo)
