Buzzard's Roost is the most Northeast cabin in Upper Camp. It is also one of the oldest cabins in camp. It is usually inhabited by 8 campers who are about 13 years old and two counselors.

Sometime in the late 80s-early '90s, the campers in Buzzards built the Buzzard's Roost Observation Deck. They placed an old cabin deck or catwalk up on the stone wall behind Buzzards. It over looked the Sanderson's old cow pasture and down towards the Seal Rock section of Lake McWain. The one or two campers would go sit on the deck in the sun and read or just as a time out place away from the cabin. Eventually the decking rotted away and the deck fell apart. The little path leading from the cabin to the stone wall where the deck was is still somewhat intact.

"The Roost" as it is sometimes called, has a reputation for being tucked back in the far corner of upper camp so it feels more private.
Inside Birch Rock's lodge, the vast majority of wall space is covered with handmade wooden plaques. Most of these plaques are lists of names of the campers who attended camp each summer. Every summer a new plaque of this type is made and then revealed with some ceremony at the night of the banquet. Not all plaques in the lodge are dedicated to campers though; there are also plaques commemorating important individuals or events in Birch Rock's History. The cabin Pete's Palace also houses plaques, but these are dedicated to the CITs instead of campers.

Camper Plaques
Every summer Birch Rock has been open since 1926 a new plaque with a list of the names of the campers that summer is nailed up in the lodge. Chief Brewster hand carved the plaques every summer from 1926 to his last full summer which was 1972. He carved the plaques in complete secrecy, no one but him saw them until they were revealed to the whole camp. Chief varied his style from year to year. Some years he divided the names into age groups, others he just arranged the names in one block in reverse alphabetical order. In the summer of 1973 when Chief was gone and no one was around to take over the large and important job of making the plaques, Dave Weeks stepped up and carved the year plaque and then had each camper carve his name into his own piece of wood. Every piece was then nailed up under the year. This idea of each camper carving his own name carried on through 1985. In 1986 Matt Voss carved the plaques himself using a router, a kind of power tool. The router has been used to carve names ever since.

The plaques also include the names of all of the campers who swam their Seal or Whale that year, often along with their times.

Most of the wall space inside the lodge is now covered with plaques. Old plaques have been moved around the walls to be more efficient with space but soon there will be no more space at new plaques. Mike Mattson has said that there is a plan for where to put plaques when there is no more space in the lodge.

A few years ago the Senior Campers recorded all of the names from every year into a computer document.

Ryan "Ryno" Massey has been a member of the BRC community since the summer of 2000. Over the years, Ryan has been a major player in camp life. He was originally hired to teach art but by the end of his first summer he had become very interested in Campcraft. Ryan has made the Campcraft activity one of our best and most popular. Ryan was the CIT director for many consecutive summers and is credited with training many of the great Birch Rock staff members from the first decade of the 21st century.

Life Before Birch Rock
Ryan and his twin Blake are both world travelers. Ryan can honestly say he has set foot on all seven continents. He met his close friend Tyler Johnston at the Cambridge School of Weston, where Ryan studied studio art in preparation for his undergraduate studies at RISD. Tyler, who was a long time Birch Rocker, knew Ryan would love the Rock. So just before the summer of 2000, Mike Mattson hired Ryan to be the camp's art counselor.

Staff Years
Summers of 2000-2002
Ryan showed up at camp determined to give his all to the art program. His plan was to focus on outdoor art and sculptures. He was put to work right away by Rich Deering who asked Ryan to help the campers design a float for the Fourth of July parade. Ryan immediately keyed on the Monster legend and decided to make a McWain Monster float. It was a top notch float. Ryan enjoyed the art but was drawn to the Campcraft activity. He quickly developed a bond with Campcraft master Mike "Don Miguel" Appicelli, and asked to be moved to the Campcraft area for the summer of 2001.

Although Tyler Johnston did not return the following summer, Ryan was drawn in and sold on what Birch Rock is all about. Ryan learned much from Don Miguel and focused mostly on Knife Rights and Fire Rights for the campers in '01.

By 2002 Ryan was highly experienced and fully energized about Campcraft. He was able to bring in the rest of the traditional Campcraft skills like axe craft, knots, shelters construction, and backcounty cooking.

Summers of 2003-2008
In 2003, Ryan moved into Rat's Nest and took on the role of CIT Director. Ryan was a little nervous but also excited to be working with the same guys he had in Pete's Palace the summer before. Ryan created a fabulous CIT program and did such a great job that he continued in that position for five more summers. Also in 2003, Ryan and Head Counselor CJ Nesher decided to make Campcraft a mandatory piece of our program to make sure all the campers learned the basics of knives and fire.

Leading into the summer of 2004, Mike Mattson and Ryan were talking about the need for a new Evening Activity, and it was Ryan who immediately started planning out Geronimo. This game was first played in '04 and has slowly evolved over subsequent summers. It is now one of the most beloved activities at camp.

In 2005 Ryan decided to adjust the Campcraft program and added a new fourth badge. This new badge was called the Ranger. Ryan's long time Campcraft "apprentice" Sam Deeran would soon become the first camper to be awarded the Ranger badge.

From 2005 to the present Ryan has been one of a team of plaque makers who work on the season's plaques for the lodge wall.

2009-2010
In 2009 Ryno decided to make a radical change and move out of the positions of CIT Director and Campcraft instructor that he had excelled in for six years. He instead dedicated his summer to bringing the Junior Maine Guide program back to BRC by training two Senior Campers in skills like cooking, canoeing, orienteering, and Maine geography. In the second session Ryno and the two boys left camp to attend the JMG testing for five days. Both young men passed with flying colors thanks to Ryno's skillful teaching.

In the winter after the summer of 2009 Ryno was asked to be Head Counselor for the following summer. After much thought and consideration, Ryno accepted the position. That summer he was an energetic and caring Head Counselor and furthermore started a fledgling horseback riding program.

Ryan "Ryno" Massey has been a member of the BRC community since the summer of 2000. 2009 will be his 10th summer at Birch Rock. Over the years, Ryan has been a major player on campus. He was originally hired to teach art but by the end of his first summer he was very interested in Campcraft. Ryan has made the Campcraft activity one of our best and most popular. Ryan has also been the CIT director for many consecutive summers and is credited with training most of Birch Rock's current staff.

Life Before Birch Rock
Ryan and his twin Blake are both world travelers and Ryan can honestly say he has set foot on all seven continents. Ryan met his close friend Tyler Johnston at the Cambridge School of Weston, where Ryan studied studio art in preparation for his undergraduate studies at RISD.

In fact, he was put to work right away by Rich Deering who asked him to help the campers design a float for the Fourth of July parade. Ryan immediately keyed on the Monster legend and decided to make a Monster float. It was a top notch float. Ryan enjoyed the art but seemed to be drawn to the Campcraft activity. He quickly developed a bond with one Mike "Don Miguel" Appicelli, and asked to be moved to the Campcraft area for the summer of 2001.

Although Tyler Johnston did not return the following summer, Ryan was drawn in and sold on what Birch Rock is all about. Ryan learned much from Don Miguel and focused mostly on Knife Rights and Fire Rights for the children in '01.

By 2002 Ryan was highly experienced and fully energized about Campcraft. He was able to bring in the rest of the traditional Campcraft skills like Axe Rights, Knots, and Shelters, etc.

Summers of 2003-2008
In 2003, Ryan moved into the Rat's Nest and became the new CIT Director. Ryan was a little nervous but also excited to be working with the same guys he had in Pete's Palace the summer before. Ryan created a fabulous CIT program and did such a great job with the program that he continued in that role for 5 more summers. Also in 2003, Ryan and Head Counselor CJ Nesher decided to make Campcraft a mandatory piece of our program to make sure all the campers learned about the basics of camping like knives and fire.

Leading into the summer of 2004, Mike Mattson and Ryan were talking about the need for a new Evening Activity, and it was Ryan who immediately started planning out Geronimo. This game was first played in '04 and has slowly taken shape over the summers. It is one of the most popular activities at camp.

By 2005 Ryan had decided to adjust the Campcraft program and added a new fourth badge to the Campcraft activity. This new badge was called the ranger. Ryan's long time camp "apprentice" Sam Deeran would soon become the first awarded with the Ranger badge.

From 2005-2008, Ryan has also been one of a team of plaque makers who work on the season's plaques for the lodge wall.

In 1929, "Chief" Brewster recruited the remarkable Albert Bryan from the Country Day School. Albert was to be the camp's cook for the next 54 summers. Albert was Jamaican by birth, with a stutter that was never an impediment to him; his wide grin and greeting "M-M-M-Monsieur!" were unforgettable, as were his legendary brownies, popovers and other treats. Campers and neighbors alike remember him as the owner of a succession of spotless Chevrolet convertibles in which he squired female acquaintances on his days off. Evenings in camp he frequented the tennis court, playing an excellent game and remarking "S-S-S-Sorry!" (but not very) after making and especially adept point.

Two of Albert's cousin's from Jamaica worked at Birch Rock and lived in the Rat's Nest for several years. Their picture can be seen in the Lodge.

Albert's legendary brownies were so good that many were asking for his brownie recipe long after his departure in 1982.

Some of Albert's other unforgettable recipes that are no longer part of the camp menu: Eggs a la Goldenrod, Welsh Rarebit, and Salmon Loaf.

Albert's Cabin is named after him. This cabin usually houses the camp cook.

Springer's Store is a 1.4m mile walk from Ye Olde Birch Rock, and a household name to any Birch Rocker. Besides winning several best pizza in Waterford awards, the store has a great atmosphere. The second you walk in you will notice the Birch Rock Camp banner over the cash register, and you will feel at home. It is a popular stop for an after trip ice cream treat, a favorite of any campers. You may also be fortunate enough to be invited by Rich to go for a walk during evening activity down to Springer's and back. What ever the occasion a Birch Rocker will find an excuse to go to springer's wether it's "I won casino night" or "mom, dad, I can't believe camp is over!... can we go to Springer's for some candy?".
Their t-shirts saying, "If I'm not here, I'm at Springers!" was first said in the pre-season one summer in the the early 2000's when Pam Stock asked the guys working if they would be around later.
Each day at Birch Rock a camper will be announced as the Super Camper at Flag-lowering for a great deed or skill performed. Many have won Super Camper for swimming their Whale or Seal or scoring the game winning goal, but most win because of a kind deed or helping the other fellow. The announced winner will wear a Superman t-shirt the next day, this includes when we're in uniform. So with everyone in uniform at a parade or off-campus event, one camper will be wearing a Superman Tee. When wearing the Super Camper Shirt the camper is expected to always have it tucked in, have excellent table manners, and is short model what an ideal camper acts like. The staff do their best to keep all sizes of SC shirts clean and ready but occasionally a lower camper will have to wear an upper campers sized shirt for supper the night they are announced because the sized that fits them is dirt, this is always humorous to see. Do to the importance of the tradition campers are asked not to wear a Superman symbol shirt unless they are the Super Camper.
There was a period in the '90s that the Super Camper shirt was a Batman Tee but it was quickly switched back to Superman.

Joshua Pincus was a camper for 8 summers and a CIT before serving on staff for another almost ten summers. Josh was the Waterfront Director for 5 summers and also served as Trip Director for a summer. Josh was a piece of the fabric of Birch Rock for almost 2 decades.

Early Years
In the early '80s there was a camper named Pittman Wallace who lived in Connecticut, just North of New York City. As a camp ambassador Pitt and his family did their best to recruit from the neighborhood. One such family was the Pincus'. Josh and his older brother Terence were off to camp.

Camper Years
Summer of 1986
When Josh arrived at camp in 1986 he was the youngest camper in camp and was a real spitfire. He had a tough Opening Day suffering from homesickness almost right away but the next morning a CIT named Mike Mattson sat next to him and just said hello. The two started chatting a bond was formed that would last all season and beyond. Josh spent most of the summer hanging out with Mike and at the end of the season he carved a thank you plaque for Mike in Woodshop. The piece of wood, an obvious scrap of old wood off the shop shelf, had a thank you note scratched into it. When Josh handed over the plaque in the Goodbye Line at the end of the summer, the two shed a tear with a warm goodbye hug. Josh's love for camp that season would turn into a major piece of his life over the next 20 years.

Summers of 1987-1993
Josh had many great experiences during his camper years. During his early summers he spent a lot of time with the lower camp gang just trying all the activities and exploring camp. He was an excellent swimmer, field guy and tennis player, but he also loved the boats and the campcraft stuff. He was another example of those all-around types of campers. Josh was well loved by the staff because he explored all the activities and therefore spent time with everyone.

During the summer of '88, Joshua came very close to being the camper to catch the Midnight Phantom in the act. He woke up and caught the Midnight Phantom with his flashlight he grabbed from the floor. The flashlight had been on Josh's trunk but now the trunk was gone and Josh in his tired state didn't even notice. The Midnight Phantom stood with Josh's trunk just outside the cabin and talked Josh back to sleep. Josh returned his flashlight to the floor and went back to bed. That night the Midnight Phantom had hit every cabin and yet Josh still had no idea who it was.

During one of his Upper Camper summers, Josh was the goalie for the BRC soccer team and played an awesome game. This was one of the last few Birch Rock vs Waganaki soccer games, a tradition that went on for many summers. Josh practiced the goalie position with Dave Jenkins a bunch leading up to the big game. Josh had a few epic deflections in that game.

His senior camper summer, Joshua swam his Whale which was certainly a proud moment in his camper life. He trained with his fellow senior campers, swimming triangle laps almost everyday.

CIT Year
Summer of 1994
Josh was a Counselor-in-Training with his long time camp friend CJ Nesher. The two went everywhere together that summer and for quite a few staff summers. Josh's talent all over the campus made him a highly useful CIT and the staff were fighting over who would get his support around campus. People were looking forward to seeing what this guy was going to do in his staff years.

Staff Years
Summers of 1995-1996
Josh taught soccer and swimming. He also spent one summer teaching the frisbee activity which included many rounds of frisbee golf with frisbees sailing all over campus. This was the first summer in a long time where everyone could truly enjoy playing Ultimate Frisbee on the hill because Josh had taught a lot of campers how to throw a frisbee, a skill that seems to elude many children.

Summers of 1998-2003
After a few counselor years under his belt, Josh was ready to take charge of the waterfront, and he continued as the Waterfront Director for many summers. Josh also likely holds the record for the Waterfront Director responsible for the most long distance swims ever. Josh trained CITs to be lifeguards and campers to be skilled swimmers. Birch Rock would have him back on the waterfront anyday.

In 2001, Josh wanted a change and decided to give the trip leading thing a shot. It was a one summer thing. Although, I believe he enjoyed it, he really missed not being in house more often and returned to the waterfront in 2002 That year he built the lake side half of the counselor swim-tent with Ryno in the pre-season.

Plaque Work
The 1994 summer was Josh's first attempt at the plaques for the Lodge. He attempted to woodburn the letters after he carved them. The plaques were not exactly was Josh had hoped for and he swore he would do the plaques again some summer.

The 2002 plaques were Josh's second attempt at the plaques and he did a fabulous job. He was pleased but wanted to do them one more time.

During the 2003 season, the light in the woodshop was on almost every night. Josh spent many many hours working on the plaques and honestly the 2003 plaques are one of the best sets on the wall. Kudos to Josh for his hardwork!

Albert's Cabin is a staff cabin built below the library and the lower tennis court. The cabin, originally constructed as the residence of the long-time head cook Albert Bryant, has been used as a staff cabin for its entire history. The cabin has had two additions to the original structure: a back room used as a bedroom, and a bathroom added in the early 2000s. In the bedroom you can see what was the outside of the roof on the inside of cabin (just like in the Lion's Den bedroom) The wood burning stove was removed from Albert's during the winter after the 2007 summer, as age and lack of maintenance had made the stove unsafe.

When a member of the cooking staff lives on campus, he often is assigned to Albert's. The cabin is in an area of camp with no camper cabins, so the activities of the campers do not interfere with the kitchen staff's responsibilities. It is considered to be one of the most comfortable cabins on campus. It has one of the oddest set of decorations of all the cabins, it has several posters of Pacific islands and ski mountains juxtaposing each other.

Birch Rock sends a group of handsome brutes from upper camp. Each Birch Rocker displays his camp colors proudly tucked and usually douses himself in fancy cologne beforehand. Once the team gets the lay of the land, boys will quickly scout out the nicest girls with whom to rock the dance floor. Everyone usually gets a chance to glide with at least one partner. The end of the dance is always Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin which all the campers know means it's their last chance to dance. Immediately after the last song the campers and staff give a roaring Birch Rock Cheer for the Arcadia ladies. then it is a very loud drive back to camp as all the campers are sharind stories and making comments about the night. Once we arrive back at camp it can take some time to get the campers to calm down and go to sleep.
Some Birch Rockers have been known to form close bonds with their Arcadia counterparts. Some have even become pen pals.
The Boat House is the home to the various boating programs at Birch Rock. The building is in the southwest corner of camp, closest to the corner of camp defined by the waterfront and the Plate's property.

The current Boat House was dedicated in 2004. It is a two-story building, with the lower level being used primarily for waterfront activities and the upper level for rainy day activities, rainy Opening Day Name Games, and movie nights. The lower level of the boat house is where life-jackets, sails, paddles, and various other boating items are kept for waterfront activities.

The original Boat House was much smaller than the current building and closer to the waterfront. The building was about the size of a typical Lower Camp cabin, with the side of the building facing the Plate's property open. It was located about 40 feet closer to the waterfront than the current building. The new Boat House was a major under taking to build. The concrete foundation has a line where one can see the second concrete truck was late in getting to the pour because it got stuck in the mud at the bottom of the hill due to heavy rains in the pre-season. The foundation was then tared by Doug Miller and Ryno. The framing went up quick and the building was finished by Turn-over Day. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held and Tibetan prayer flags were hung by David Weeks.
Upper camp is the older age half of camp. It is located on a different side and uphill of camp from Lower Camp and it has some other differences. Upper camp cabins hold 8 campers or more and two counselors while lower camp cabins hold four campers, a counselor and sometimes a CIT. Another difference is that upper camp lights out is later than lower camp lights out. Most cabins in upper camp are named after the homes of birds, with the exception of Pete's Palace which was named after Pete Haas. The first two cabins are in the third age group and the second two cabins are in the fourth age group. When there are too many Senior Campers for just Pete's Cabin 8 becomes part of upper camp to hold the extra senior campers.

Random Upper Camp facts:

There is a "Upper Camp Quad" with a fire pit and wooden seats (usually birch stumps) located in the middle between Owl's, Buzzard's, and Eagle's. This area was constructed in 2000 by the Art program when it was run by Ryno. This quad is now the primary location for Cabin Night.

Owl's Perch is the newest cabin in Upper Camp, Eagle's Nest is the oldest cabin, and Uncle Tom's Cabin no longer exists but was in the location of Pete's Palace and is almost completely forgotten about.

Upper Camp is considered the more defensible location for Cross Camp Capture the Flag because the flag is first placed in the Upper Camp Quad.

A checker board was carved into the very large stump downhill of Owl's in 2000 by Thomas Joyce, the tree that stood there can be seen in old photos of Upper Camp.

Sound from Pete's Palace echoes off the Tennis Court directly to the lodge producing odd sounds.

Oddly the Upper Camp wash house has much smaller toilet stalls that the Lower Camp wash house.
Hilton A and B are the first two cabins in Lower Camp but are in the same building. Hilton A houses the youngest campers in camp, usually ages 7-8. Hilton B holds slightly older kids from age 9-10. Because of the large range of ages in Hilton it is possible for a camper to stay in Hilton for up to his first four years at camp. There was a shuffleboard painted on the hall floor next to Hilton B in the 90's, it was removed when the floors were redone in 2004 by Janice Walker and Ryan Massey. The name Hilton comes from the fact that the cabin has a bathroom built in so you don't have to walk all the way to a wash house. Campers who live in Hilton are often called Hiltonites. Hilton A and B have Cabin Night together and go on their trip to Crooked River together. It is the only cabin on campus with an asymmetrical roof.

Long ago there was One Great Tribe with one Chief. There was peace, and food was bountiful. The Chief had two sons, Black Elk and Red Wolf, and only one would become the next leader of the tribe. When the Chief died in his sleep one night, he moved on to the Spirit World. From there he appeared in their dreams and told them that they must decide who will become leader. The next morning the two brothers began arguing over whom would become the Chief. One of them reached for their father’s Spirit Staff, and the other tried to take it from him. They began to wrestle for it. In the blindness of their anger they forgot this staff, made by the Ancient Ones was very fragile. The staff broke in two, each brother clutching a half. In their anger over breaking the staff Black Elk and Red Wolf each took half the tribe and went off into to a new area in the Great Woods...

Food became scarce, and water sources dried up. Competition formed, and soon erupted into a tribal war. The tribes meet on an open field to settle their feud in battle. The field became soaked with the blood of the two tribes, and many a good many good men were lost on both sides. There were only a few left on the Battlefield when Red wolf came upon Black Elk… and they began to fight. Suddenly in a blast of wind and light the spirit of their father appeared with all the Great Spirits. The brothers instantly stopped fighting and realized how foolish they were. They gave their word to never fight each other again. Their father’s spirit told them to met here every summer to hold a loving battle in memory of the men who had passed on to the Spirit World. The spirits faded and told them “Help the other fellow" in unison.

Now each summer the two tribes meet each other on the Battle field with smiles and laughter instead of weapons. The game keeps the tribe’s skills honed in case there is an invading danger. The Spirit of the Great Chief of the One Great Tribe always watches over each game... and his name is Geronimo!!
Gameplay
Your Mission
To return the other tribe’s Spirit Stick to The Center.
----
Field of Play
Geronimo is played with a central Battlefield containing Sacred Circles and The Center. The Battlefield is bordered by two Chief’s Lands on opposite ends. Inside each Chief’s Land is a Circle of the Ancients. Inside each of these holy circles is one of the two Spirit Sticks. The Battlefield does not belong to ether tribe therefore any player can be killed on it by any other player. Battle is never safe.
Sacred Circles
These circles lay within the Battlefield. An unoccupied Sacred Circle is neutral and may be claimed by either tribe, thus making it safe for that tribe. It takes two members from a tribe to claim a circle. When a Sacred Circle fills with to many players from one tribe it upsets The Balance and angers the Great Spirits who may rush the circle trying to kill the players and restore The Balance.

If a player gets a stolen Spirit Stick into one of these circles it does not return to the Circle of the Ancients if the player is killed. Instead it returns to the last Sacred Circle it entered. A carrier of a Spirit Stick can take over any Sacred Circle.

At the middle of the Battlefield is The Center. In this circle the Spirit Sticks start and finish. At the start of the game both tribes are in their Chief’s Land and one member of each tribe runs out, grabs their Spirit Stick, runs to the Chief’s Land and placed in the Circle of the Ancients. Only then may the tribe charge the field.
Chief’s Land
At opposite ends of the Battlefield is the Chief’s Lands. Within it is the Circle of the Ancients. Only Chiefs may guard this circle which holds the Spirit Stick. No other tribe member may enter the Chief’s Land of that tribe. Only a Rival Tribe Warrior may enter the Circle of the Ancients to steal the Spirit Stick.
----
Classes
There are three different classes one can play as in Geronimo.
Warriors
The honorable main force of the Tribe. Warriors are much like Knights or Samurai. They are the heroes of the Tribe. The Warriors defend the edge of the Chief’s Land and charge into the Rival Tribe’s Chief’s land to capture their Spirit Stick. Only a Warrior may capture the Spirit Stick and return it to The Center.
Chiefs
The true backbone of the Tribe. Chiefs make or break a game. Only a Chief may guard a Circle of the Ancients, and guard it with their life they do. It is a sacred position to protect the Tribe’s holy symbol. If a Chief leaves their land before a Spirit Stick is stolen they become a Warrior. A Chief may chase a captured stick’s carrier out of the Chief’s Land, but they must return to their land when the carrier gets killed or enters a sacred circle.
Shaman
The mystic healers of the Tribe. Their lives are spent performing and perfecting the rituals that maintain the link between the Tribe and the Great Spirits. This fills their bodies with spiritual energy. During battle it is them alone who can bring the Dead back to life, because of the spiritual energy in them. A Shaman does not steal the Spirit Stick or returning it to The Center, for it would disturb their energy. They can carry it on the Battlefield. They allowed to enter Chief’s Land, but only to heal Chiefs

The building was located on the opposite side of the road from Injun Joe's and was mostly surrounded by trees and underbrush. The woods surrounding the cabin, rustic bark siding, and rules forbidding campers to go near it gave the cabin an air of spookiness and mystery. The cabin was pulled down by Don MUnn with a back hoe and took Doung Miller and Ryan Massey two days to burn to ashes, char marks can still be seen on the large Black Birch next to Denault's Den.

The Story:
In their anger over breaking the staff Black Elk and Red Wolf each took half the tribe and went off into to a new area in the Great Woods…
The spirits faded and told them “Help the other fellow” in unison.
Now each summer the two tribes meet each other on the Battle field with smiles and laughter instead of weapons. The game keeps the tribe’s skills honed in case there is an invading danger. The Spirit of the Great Chief of the One Great Tribe always watches over each game…… and his name is Geronimo!!

Your Mission: To return the other tribe’s Spirit Stick to The Center.

Field of Play
-Geronimo is played with a central Battlefield containing Sacred Circles and The Center. The Battlefield is bordered by 2 Chief’s Lands on opposite ends. Inside each Chief’s Land is a Circle of the Ancients. Inside each of these holy circles is one of the two Spirit Sticks. The Battlefield does not belong to ether tribe therefore any player can be killed on it by any other player. Battle is never safe.
Sacred Circles:
-These circles lay within the Battlefield.
-If a player gets a stolen Spirit Stick into one of these circles it does not return to the Circle of the Ancients if the player is killed. Instead it returns to the last Sacred Circle it entered. A carrier of a Spirit Stick can take over any Sacred Circle.
-At the middle of the Battlefield is The Center.
Chief’s Land:
-At opposite ends of the Battlefield is the Chief’s Lands.

Classes

Warriors-
The honorable main force of the Tribe.

Chiefs-
The true backbone of the Tribe.

Shamans-
The mystic healers of the Tribe.

Campcraft is an activity at Birch Rock where campers learn how to use knifes, how to make fires and other survival skills. It is generally a popular after activity, most campers go to it at least a few times. There are four campcraft badges instead of the usual three for most activities. There is the junior badge, senior, advanced, and the Ranger. Along with badges, a camper can earn his knife and fire rights at campcraft so he can use his knife and make campfires outside of campcraft. Campcraft takes place on the waterfront at Injun Joe's.
Knife rights
If a camper has his knife rights he can keep a knife in his cabin and carve with a counselor's permission. This is useful on cabin nights when one needs a stick for cooking hot dogs and on trips. For a camper to earn his knife rights he must show skill with a knife and have knowledge of proper knife handling. The parts of getting one's knife rights are below.
*Learn how to sharpen a knife
Campcraft is an activity at Birch Rock where campers learn how to use knifes, how to make fires and other survival skills. Campcraft takes place on the waterfront at Injun Joe's.
