Faithful friends and loyal neighbors are an integral part of what makes our camp community. Henry Plate along with his lovely wife Joy have been cheering our boys from the hillside for over 75 years while helping to support and create a vibrant Waterford Community for decades. When they are not juggling their various civic engagements throughout the town or tending to their extraordinary farm, they can be found at day’s end on their porch viewing the Mahoosucs and waiting to hear the thundering noise of the BRC gentlemen playing on the hillside. Here’s a conversation with Henry and Joy Plate sharing just a “slice of life” of living in Waterford:

How did you come to Maine and Camp Waganaki?
My gym teacher in grammar school who was also a counselor at Camp Waganaki introduced me and my parents to Director Walter Gardell. They came to our house and showed us some photo slides. My folks thought it would be a good idea to send me to camp being an only child.
I went to camp for two years, 1938 and 1939, and for eight weeks each summer.

What were your earliest recollections of Maine?
My family had been to Maine before, staying at Chute’s in Naples where there were cabins and a main dining room. My parents used to come to vacation in late August and early September for a few weeks prior to Labor Day.

Do you remember your first impression of East Waterford?
It was time to eat breakfast! ( laughter). I was glad to be out of the city!

What was camp life like for you?
A lot of swimming and riflery. We worked around the camp building things. Swim periods were instructional. There was wood working, nature, hiking and other things to do.
(There were four children’s camps and one adult camp on the lake – Waganaki, Birch Rock, Waizyatah, Passaconaway, and the adult camp was Camp McWain, which had been a girls’ camp run by Helen Sanderson).

What attracted you and your family to Maine?
I don’t know. My folks travelled around and wanted to find a summer place. They liked coming to Maine for vacation. My folks decided to look at this property on Memorial Day in 1940. We stayed at Pike’s on Mill Hill and got a key from the Postmaster at the General Store so that we could see everything.
On Monday of Memorial Day, we drove home and my dad made an offer for $2500 for the 53 acres and buildings and it was accepted. However, there was a lot of work to do.
The farm was vacant for about five years. There was not power, heat but the building was in decent shape with a view. The house had been used by some of the counselors from Camp Waganaki so there was some clean up and some debris to get rid of…….
We didn’t get power until 1948 - like Birch Rock and the rest of East Waterford – and we heated the house with wood in the kitchen’s woodstove.
After my folks bought the farm in 1940, we were spending the summers here from mid-June till September. In 1942, went to the University of Maine (Orono). I was interested in agriculture and liked being in Maine. I was there for two years before I was drafted for the service (World War II). Following my army time of 2 years, I returned to the university where I continued my studies in Dairy Husbandry. I decided to continue for a master’s degree in Agronomy (crops and soils) and finished in the spring of 1949. After college I returned to New Jersey.

What happened next?
I started work at Eastern States Farmers Exchange in West Springfield, MA.
And?
I met Joy there. She was wondering down the hall.

Joy, what was your first impression of Henry?
A gentleman. Our first date went to the movies and then a Chinese restaurant where we both had cheeseburgers. We dated for four long, long, long years and got married in February of 1958.
We had many trips on weekends to the farm, and even in the winters with Henry’s dad. Bob was born in 1962 and Karen followed in 1963.
When did you both finally get to Maine permanently?
Joy: After we lived in MA and moved later to New York and raised our family…… Henry finally retired and moved to Maine permanently in 2005.
What’s it like to be part of Waterford?
Joy: It keeps us active. There is friendship, the Waterford Historical Society, Waterford Community Church – where Henry has done so much as a trustee and the Wilkins House. We have loved being part of it. You are as busy as you want to be and busier than you have to be….
What’s it like to have had grandchildren part of Birch Rock?
Joy: It was fun to see them over there and waive back over here! It is an added bonus being part of the neighborhood. We sometimes get a bag of surprise cookies! McWain Hill is home!
Henry: We like hearing the noise. Happy to see the activity down the hill. In fact, most of the Waterford neighbors came here because of their love of summer camps including Birch Rock.

Pam Stock has been a figure at BRC since she first set foot on campus in 1993. She was looking for a camp for her son Zach and Wendy Penley told her to look at Birch Rock. She fell in love with the place, sending her son for many years and taking on the role of camp librarian. She remembers camp in the early days as being smaller and less organized but with more of a family feel. She had to work hard getting the library back after years of neglect and accumulated dust to the state its in today. Pam, like Onie Brewster, tutored hundreds of campers who appreciated her kindness in the otherwise undesirable circumstances.

In 2007 Pam tried to retire and was gone for three years, but came back in 2010 to everyone's delight. Recently she started the Library Counsel, a panel of campers to decide which books the library needs for the future. She recalls he favorite moments at camp as her first Banquet, the time one camper got locked in the library and climbed out the window, and the moment when her first golden retriever Kermit suddenly died and the whole camp had a moment of silence. Kermit and Pam's next dog Bentley were and are well known attractions of the Library.

Here is an excerpt from an article Pam wrote for the Spring 2014 Birch Bark:

I am sitting on the deck of my home overlooking Matinicus Harbor. There are no lobster boats moored in the harbor at the moment. I believe one has gone out to fish this morn. But within the month to come this harbor will be bustling with the energy and anticipation of another island summer.
Matinicus Island is Maine’s most remote, year round populated island. There are no stores whatsoever. We must fax our grocery orders to Shaws in Rockland. Weather permitting, the groceries will be flown out by single engine plane. That’s also how we (people and dogs) get on and off island most of the time. There is ferry service once a month, weather permitting. So we don’t make too many plans around the ferry right now. Our lifeline is that little single engine plane and the dirt airstrip. In the winter there are between 20-30 residents on island. We have a one room schoolhouse and are currently providing an education for two childen. That’s where I come in as their teacher.
This is my last year as a public school teacher, having started back in 1974. I have taught in the Australian Outback, a one room schoolhouse in Vermont, and several other interesting, challenging environments. Seems only fitting and proper that my career ends on Maine’s most remote island.
Sitting on this deck with a balmy 44 degree temperature, it feels like it’s time to look ahead as the lobstermen do. My thoughts turn from Matinicus Harbor to Lake McWain. I remember the first time I walked into the little library. I think that was 1992. I looked around longingly and asked if perhaps the camp needed a tutor or librarian? And here I am (just a few years later) still looking forward to that wonderful, magical building under the pines.
Okay, there have been a few changes since then. My original motivation for working at camp, besides the obvious, idyllic setting, was to provide an opportunity for my two young sons to attend camp. Zach and Tyler were 10 and 6 when they started. Now they are grown men (31 and 27) both living in Denver. Some of you may remember Kermit, the Original BRC dog. There were even skits written about him for Campfire. When Kermit passed away I was so moved and appreciative for the moment of silence held for him at lunch in the grove. Then it was on to the next golden personality, Bentley. His picture is still featured on the website with Andy Churchill in the library. Last summer he was joined by a step-brother, Brewster. (I didn’t even name him, just coincidence) He was a rescued dog and my Matinicus buddy. Both of these dogs were gentle, sweet souls who loved camp with a passion. Sadly, I must report that we lost both of these wonderful boys to cancer this winter. Bentley had just turned 11. Brewster was 9 or 10ish. I have no doubt that Bentley will be at camp in spirit next summer. He LOVED his tennis balls and swimming. Brewster was just figuring out what a great place camp was. We will all miss dogs in the library.
But, I will be back, along with Ruth. We love the place, the people, the traditions and the energy that you can feel as you roll down the hill on Opening Day. So, as I watch the lobstermen loading their traps back onto their boats for the season ahead, I know that every additional boat in the harbor, and each trap in the ocean takes me one step closer to summer and another opportunity at BRC.
Nicolas Wells Musciano, aka the Italian Stallion, Musc, is one of Birch Rock's most dedicated counselors. With his ever present smile and strong circle of old friends, it wouldn't be a stretch to call Nick Birch Rock's Friendliest Counselor. Nick has been coming to Birch Rock since 1998, attending every season except for 2007. Currently Nick is the Field Director and can be found every day teaching Basketball and all other field activities.

Nick found Birch Rock through one of his fathers's patients, Eli Hutchins. Some of Nick's earliest memories of Birch Rock are of counselor Thomas Joyce, who helped Nick out of homesickness and gave him his famous nickname. Thomas was known for calling "Nick, the Italian Stallion, MUSIAAAAANO!!!" at whatever chance he had except, in a moment of self restraint, when he subbed in for Nick's math teacher in his hometown of Falmouth, Maine. Another of Nick's mentors was Matt Downs who was field director for several years while Nick was a camper. Besides the field activities Nick also enjoyed Campcraft.

Some of Nick's favorite moments as a camper were the Prince of Biroca skit and the late night party in the grove that followed a showing of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He has vivid memories of Birch Rock trips like Mahoosucs, Goose Eye, and the hardest, Moose River.

As a counselor Nick started in Upper Camp, but in recent summers has moved down to Cabin 4. His favorite moments in recent years have been the Campfire seasons of 2009 and 2010, the counselor vehicles Millennium Falcon & Death Star, and 4th period Basketball every day.

Zach "Pickles" Lynn is one of Birch Rock's brightest counselors. He has been coming to the Rock every summer since 2003 when he was referred by his friend Tuck Richardson, who was in turn referred by his father. He attended the first session that year and returned for the full 7 weeks for his remaining camper years. Zach received the nickname “Pickles” one summer to alleviate the confusion caused by 6 other Zach’s on campus. Pickles' favorite activities are kayaking and tennis and he spends his activity periods instructing both.

Pickles remembers his early camper years fondly as a time without Magic cards, before the new Boat House or Brewster Lodge was build. Such Midnight Phantom pranks from his years include the soccer goal being transplanted to the grove and every trunk in lower camp being stacked at the flagpole. The most significant new tradition at camp for him was the birth of Geronimo in 2004. In those years counselor Nordy, with his energy and skill at Campfire, was Zach's favorite. As a counselor Pickles has channeled Nordy's spirit with his enervated "Decathlon" announcements and gut-busting campfire roles. Pickles's proudest moments as a camper were swimming his Whale and finishing the "Gauntlet" for the Adv. Kayaking, both during his senior camper year. Some of his most challenging moments were on trips to the Presidential Range and Rangeley Lakes, as well as MWA.

Pickles' first year as a counselor in 2009 was a significant role reversal, but one that he described as "fun, great." He spent that summer in Hilton where he would stay for the next two years. In 2012 he transitioned to Upper Camp, taking on the role of co-counselor in Eagle's Nest.
The Junior Maine Guide Program (JMG) is a long-established wilderness camping skills program sponsored by Maine Summer Camps and the Maine State Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. It is an outdoor skills program designed to foster enjoyable, safe and healthy outdoor living experiences for youth ages 9 – 18. JMG certification can lay the groundwork for later training and certification for a Maine Trip Leader permit, as well as provide a lifetime of enjoyment of living in concert with nature in the Maine wilderness. JMG uses current philosophies in outdoor living. The program, unique to Maine, was created in 1937 as an act of the State Legislature, in an effort to promote the use of the Maine wilderness for recreation as well as to train new generations of youth to adopt use practices that conserve the environment. It is offered by various Maine summer camps.

David Weeks represents the core energy and values of Birch Rock. Head Counselor, Camp Director, President of the Board, Trustee, Proud Father of Will, Sebastian, Robert David and Senior Counselor Extraordinaire. David Weeks brings a hurricane of spirit each season he entrenches his heart and soul at the Rock.

1971-1979: Trip Leader, Head Counselor
Dave found out about Birch Rock at age 20 from his cousin Nat, who wanted to take Dave on as a Trip Leader to help with the floundering trip program. Nat Weeks was a student of Milton Academy and young protegee of Mike Deneault '30-70s, already a BRC legend and Milton's Assistant Director of Athletics.
Hired under the recommendation of Jim Marrion from Cardigan Mtn. School, and having served three summers at another boys' camp in Western Maine, David arrived to BRC in 1971.

David arrived to East Waterford eager to please. He was a masterful athlete, fluent in three languages (English, French, and Spanish), master performer who could sing, tell a story and create magic with campers and his fellow staff members. A graduate of Belmont Hill Academy and Harvard College, Dave hailed from Belmont, Ma, having been the middle of seven siblings. Little did he know that one of the strongest connections of his life was about to unfold.

David was initially hired to lead the canoe program and trip component of BRC. He loved the water and took to the canvas war canoes of BRC with a vengeance. Mastering the art of the J stroke, David attracted all kinds of campers to brave the waters of Pond and evolved the fledgling trip program with cousin Nat. They honed their outdoor skills under the masterful hand of Mike Deneault, who himself had trained under Buck Hard, and whom Dave calls his mentor.

After two years on the trip staff, and the retirement of BRC of veteran Head Counselor Jim Marion, in 1973 Dave move into the role of the camp's official master of ceremonies—Head Counselor, a role he would keep through 1978. David was a natural. With an flair for detail and the dramatic, David's natural alchemy was able to forge a community spirit and a respect for community out of the rich history and set of resources that is Birch Rock. Some of Dave's fondest memories at the Rock are watching the sunset at the Birch Rock as the camp talked about their values and morals.

1973 was a year of endings and new beginnings. Chief Brewster, co-founder and soul of the Camp, died during the first week of the season, peacefully slipping away in his sleep. The whole Camp community pulled together. David's zestfulness and joy of life was a central part of the Community's healing process. Dave brought music into our daily lives—singing the Camp songs again and encouraging crazy, wonderful, wild Campfires that made us all laugh and zing. This passion would be grown into the very heart of the Community over the years.

1980s
Dave moved up and began his directorship in 1980 and served in this position for another two years until 1983. Dave could handle the mothers (and the fathers): seeing natural leaders and encouraging everyone's participation in the Family of Camp. Dave worked and lived in Maryland and that became one of the main sources of new campers. Dave knew the Mendelsons in Baltimore. Knew the Herzigs in New York. Knew the Deerings in Maine. Dave was gifted in his ability to lend love and passion and a sense of vision to the things and people he believed in. And Dave has love and believed in Camp and our Community for decades these many years now.

Dave was a great recruiter. He did it well because he believed; believed in Camp and why Birch Rock is so special. In 1980 and 1981, Onie Brewster, co-founder and soul of Camp, was very frail and living in Florida—missing Maine where she had spent over sixty summer at Birch Rock. Dave knew her well and knew how she missed it. So, ever the deft and joyful, Dave embarked on a two year effort of recording and sending Onie oral history snapshots and impressions of Camp using the old cassette tapes. Onie just loved the thoughtfulness and recorded tapes back. She loved especially the crazy laughing whole Camp singing of songs rocking the Lodge.

Dave enjoys the richness of life. Years ago I remember him playing the bass saxophone--it's rich breathy sounds like some jazzy shine--during first rest periods, drifting down the Hill from Chief's. Dave gave us a sense of style. Learned it to us, taught us what an eye for excellence is and to appreciate the same. Dave excelled in the "enchanting" of the Banquet. Dave brought to the Community a deep lesson in and passion for loving and living life. Dave has shared that feeling to us as a Community. And we grow from it.

Camp Director David Weeks was at the helm for three seasons: 1980-82. With the inexorable support of a dedicated, multi-tasking spirited staff, Dave launched the next generation of Birch Rock stewards and leaders: Rich Deering, Ryck Birch, Harry Cleaves, Toby Brewster, Scott MacGregor, Seth Brewster, Jerry Curry, Peter Herzig, Chris Cogswell, David Needle, Seth & Cameron Greene, Mike Arndt, Cort Morgan, Bob Duncanson…supported by his very close colleague and BRC legend, Lt. Pete Haas and the eldest Brewester brother, Ben Brewster.

Dave brought a whole new level of synergy and spirit. And passed it on.

In 1983, Dave co-directed with Ben Brewster. Together they laid the foundation for Ben to take over running Camp for the next two years.

After enrolling in his first of two masters of education programs at the University of Michigan, Dave followed his personal passion of traveling the globe. Dave spent time in East Asia, Europe and networked with his beloved Birch Rock Family all over the globe. Friends like Franke Cooke, Xavier Thuriolt and Tom Amidshalt were just a few in Dave's rolodex.

After visiting his best friend in Canada, Dave met his future bride, Marie Despres. A talented lawyer and native of Quebec, Dave found the love of his life, and married her in June of 1985.

Dave continued his involvement in BRC by succeeding Whizzer Wheeler of Waterford, Me as the camp's new Board President. Dave renewed our energy working with the Brewster Family in defining the camp's future and strategic planning process. For the last twenty-five years to this day, Dave Weeks has been helping lead the camp community.
